Barra da Tijuca beach

Barra da Tijuca is a developed neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The city is new compared to other cities in Brazil. You will see high buildings and many startups growing there. Near the beach there are lot of things going on. At night you will see lights and lot of people in restaurants, bars, theater. There are several internet cafes nearby if you are a digital nomad like me this information will help you.

Joatinga Beach

Joatinga and Grumari both beaches are different from other beaches of Rio. Here places are rocky and high cliffs present nearby. On the other side also you will nice big apartments and hotels. Joatinga is also popular among surfers and boarders. Joatinga is cut from the city chaos so you will find more peace here.

Joatinga is not recommended if you are visiting with your kids as the way tot the beach is rocky and hard to walk. The best time to visit this beach is morning as evening brings more shadow to the beach due to its location.

Ipanema Beach

Ipanema Beach
Ipanema Beach

Like Copacabana, Ipanema Beach is also popular among tourists. The drawback of a popular destination is big crowds. This beach is bordered by Arpoador Beach and Leblon Beach from either sides. Ipanema is expensive as it is city center. You will see wealthy people living here.

Ipanema is totally safe for beach lovers, you will find people from different parts of the world coming here. You will vendors selling coconuts and other items. People here are proud to show gay and lesbian pride.

Prainha Beach

Prainha Beach

No doubt Brazil has some best beaches in the world. When a beach becomes best it becomes crowded. If you want to stay away from crowds and have little peace Prainha beach can be an awesome choice. This beach is not as big as Copacabana or Barra beach. But, it has beautiful mountains which may be fascinating for nature lovers like me.

It is about 45 minutes drives away from from the Rio De Janerio. Not ideal for swimmers, highly recommended for surfers.

The name Macumba comes from a religious cult who combines Brazil Christians with voodoo elements. Even today you can see some people doing rituals on the beach. This place is paradise for surfers. But, if you are not a surfer like me you would like to avoid the strong steep shore and strong waves.

If you want some rest from city rush come to Macumba. It is not filled with tourists and locals. You may find surfers and few people enjoying on the beach.

Grumari Beach

Grumari Beach

As I mentioned, both Joatinga and Grumari are set away from the city. You will need to hire a taxi as public transport not available to Grumari. The waves are strong and makes a perfect spot for TV, Film shooting.

Grumari is located west of Rio and is stretched about 1.5 mile, takes 11 mile from the Barra city. Grumari is located in isolated place, no people live nearby.
